Su iglesia se construyó en el siglo XVI con el mecenazgo del obispo placentino Gutierre de Vargas Carvajal y bajo la dirección del maestro cantero Sancho de Cabrera y mezcla elementos góticos y renacentistas. Hasta 1993 tuvo estatus de vicaría.
Desde 1982, el edificio es candidato a Bien de Interés Cultural en la categoría de Monumento, pero el expediente original no llegó a resolverse porque se vio interrumpido por el traspaso interadministrativo de competencias. En julio de 2018, la Junta de Extremadura ha incoado un nuevo expediente para su declaración.
